Relationship Web vs Relationship Map vs Relationship Chart: What’s the Difference?

A relationship chart with the main character in the middle and connections around them.

People search for a relationship web, a relationship map and a relationship chart as if they were different tools. In practice they are the same idea drawn in slightly different shapes. This guide explains how the three usually differ, and which one to pick for your cast.

The short answer

When to use each

Use a relationship web when…

your story has a clear protagonist. Put them in the middle and place friends, rivals and family in rings around them. The distance from the center can show how close each person is.

Use a relationship chart when…

you want a flexible, general diagram: a drama cast, a family tree, a team. There is no fixed center, so you can arrange people however the story reads best.

Use a relationship map when…

you have many characters split into groups, such as houses, guilds or departments. Draw a frame around each group so readers see the factions first and the individual connections second.

How to build a relationship web

  1. Pick the hub. Choose the character everyone connects to and place them in the middle.
  2. Add the inner ring. Add the two to four people closest to the hub: family, partner, best friend.
  3. Add the outer ring. Add acquaintances, rivals and background characters further out.
  4. Label the lines. Write one or two words per line, and use an arrow when a feeling goes one way.
  5. Color the groups. Use one color per group so clusters show up without reading every label.

You can do all of this in the Relationship Map Maker, or start from an example in the template gallery.

Tip: if a web gets crowded, move the outer ring into a second chart. Two clear charts read better than one tangled one.

Can I make a relationship map for free?

Yes. You can build and export one for free with up to 6 people and no sign-up. Larger maps and watermark-free export are Premium features.
